FCAT week. Monday and Tuesday is Reading. Wednesday is Math.
I want to remind parents that this is the 4th quarter and your child needs 10 points to pass to the next grade level. Please stay on top of them so that they don't start slacking.
Also regarding discipline, I have a chart for my 2nd and 6th period students. The grade they receive by the end of the 4th quarter is the grade I put under conduct on their report card. If you have questions regarding how my discipline chart works, please e-mail me.

Please make sure your child is attending tutoring during the week if they scored a 1 or 2 on last year's FCAT or attending Saturday tutoring if they achieved a 3 or higher. Saturday tutoring starts next Saturday (November 13th).

The narrative is over and we have moved on to learning about writing an effective expository essay. Also please see the announcements section and the homelearning section.
Report cards go out next week.
October 22, 2010
Your child is on the embedded assessment 1 in Springboard where they are writing a narrative about an incident that changed him or her. They are fixing all of the mistakes from the rough draft that they worked on in class. Hopefully they all saved it to their computer or flash drive. Once they fix the mistakes and make it better using the checklist of the narrative elements, they will print it out again. It must be TYPED and PRINTED! They will bring to me the first typed rough draft and the new (2nd) rough draft.
Middle School tutoring Begins  October 18th-this is for students who scored a 1 or 2 on the Math or Reading FCAT.
Monday and Wednesday:  Math --- 2:45 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.
Tuesday and Thursday: Reading ---  2:45 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.

A day= periods 1, 3, 5, 7

B day=periods 1, 2, 4, 6

Today we worked on memory maps where the students made a storyboard or a little booklet about an incident that happened to them and that changed them in a certain way. They had to write the incident, how they were feeling, dialogue, and draw a picture on each page.  I'm counting it as a project grade. They are so cute.

Make sure your child completes the Lion King narrative over the weekend. It is worth a test grade. I am assessing to see if they know all of the elements that need to be included to write an effective narrative. We are starting Springboard Activity 1.7 (Memory Map) next week...

Also please sign and return the media consent form that your child was given. My only period that has not received it yet is my 3rd period.

Sept. 29th, 2010

Please make sure your children are keeping up with reading plus. This will be a weekly grade.

Please see the READING PLUS tab

Sept. 22nd, 2010

Here is what we have been doing during class. We discussed storytelling, characters, protagonist, antagonist, plot, resolution, conflicts, external and internal conflicts, first person and third person point of view. We talked about the narrator and what it means to narrate. We discussed what knowledge and skills are needed to complete the Embedded Assessment 1 effectively and drew it on a poster. The Embedded Assessment 1 is the narrative that the students will write in a few weeks, but not yet. Right now we are on Activity 1.5 and we will not get to the Embedded Assessment 1 until Activity 1.11 in Springboard.  We also did a word map on the word Transform which is a synonym for "change". We did brainstorming about what oral fluency meant and we talked about the three qualities of an effective reader which are accuracy, rate, and inflection. We did an oral reading activity where everyone in the class read out loud and they had to score themselves on a scale from 1-4 for each category and write comments on what they needed to improve to be a good oral reader.

Sept. 20th, 2010

This thursday will be an early release, which means we get out at 12 pm, so arrange accordingly.

I want to remind students and parents that all of my periods are on the detention list signifying that whoever does not bring in their homework will now receive a detention.

The following 8 students still need to turn in their signed syllabus:

2nd period- Kenneth Morales, Jasiel Perez, Andreina Vargas

3rd period- Andrew Vasquez

4th period- Leonardo Cabrera

5th period- Emily Rivera

6th period- Nelson Figueroa and Ashley T

Sept. 14th, 2010

We have begun Springboard. We are on Unit 1, Activity 1.1 and some classes have begun Activity 1.2. The students are learning what they will be doing in the embedded assessment 1 (which is a narrative about an incident that changed them). They are thinking about all of the changes that they are encountering being in 6th grade. The students will not usually take the book home. At the end of the year they get to keep the book. If you are interested in their work throughout the year and would like to see the different activities, you may do so at any time.

Sept. 13th, 2010

Buy your child's yearbook at OPEN HOUSE and get a special for $50 and you get 10 parent volunteer hours. The yearbook is hard cover. It has 6th-12th grade. It is big. It is ALL IN COLOR. The yearbook staff spends a lot of time and money on it and therefore the price is very reasonable.

Sept. 10, 2010

There have been quite a few students who do not understand or who are not following my late policy. If the child turns in something 1 day late, then it is 25 points off. That means they need to see me at some point through out their day (before school, between classes, during lunch, after school, etc) and hand me the assignment that they are turning in late. Once they turn it in to me two days later, which is the day that they see me again, it is an F. I have explained this to them so many times and still they are turning things in 2 days later and then are surprised when I tell them it is an F. I'm very sorry but my late policy is simply there for emergencies. I would think that if they know they are getting 25 points off, they wouldn't want to turn in anything late. It's placed there so the students learn responsibility and to turn things in when they are due. Please help me in this matter. This year the students are taking a lot longer to transition than usual so we need your help in assisting in this transition from elementary to middle.

OPEN HOUSE WILL BE ON SEPTEMBER 15 (Wednesday) at 6 pm

Sept 6, 2010

If your child did not know he/she was Advanced, I have postponed the due date for HeartBeat. Please see the "homelearning tab" for the postponed date. I had quite a few students who did not turn in their homework today. It is vital for their grade to turn in homework on time. My detention policy will be in effect starting next week. This means that if more than 20% of the class does not turn in their homework, they get put on the detention list. Whoever does not bring in their homework after that day, will receive a detention (only in their respective period). Not doing homework is a defiant act where the child is choosing not to turn in their required assignments.  They must be keeping up with their assighments. Ignorance will not be an excuse. Please help the teachers out by making sure your child is doing their required assignments at home. Remember that for Language Arts I post everything on my website. Thank you.

****READING SUMMER PROJECT(S) DUE SEPT 7/8 (change it in your agenda)

Thank you for signing the welcome letter/syllabus the correct way. Some of you had to sign it again because it's the only way for me to know that you truly read my syllabus.  I know the beginning of the school year can get crazy with all of the paperwork and that is why I require that the parents copy down the statement. That saves me and you time in the long run if you know what my homework is and you know what is going on during class. Also if you are logging into parent portal then  you won't have to ask me what your child's grade is. This week we have the baseline assessment required by the state. It is to get an idea of where your child is to see what their strengths and weaknesses are and what needs to be worked on during the year. Thursday and Friday we have the supply check and Thursday we will finally be able to begin Springboard. I will start assigning homework soon so please make sure to check my website as you might need to assist your child for a little while in the beginning until they get used to it.
