Lesson 6 Vocabulary Words:

1. approached (v): drew closer or nearer to

2. canopy (n): a covering that can provide shade

7. ridges (n): raised strips or lines

Lesson 5 Vocabulary Words:

1. cast (n)- a slight hint or trace of some color

4. dilapidated (adj)- run-down, as from age, misuse, wear, etc.; partly ruined; in disrepair

6. Hoarse-(adj) Sounding rough and harsh

7. Mumble-(v) To speak in low, unclear tones

8. Patient-(adj) willing to put up with waiting, difficulty, pain, etc

9. Recite- (v) To tell about; to describe in detail; to repeat

Vocabulary Words for Quiz 1

1-Strategy-a plan, method, or series of maneuvers for obtaining a specific goal or result.

2-Protagonist-the leading character, hero, or heroine of a drama or other literary work.

3-Modes- a particular type or form of something.

4-Folklore- the traditional beliefs, legends, customs, etc., of a people; lore of a people.

5-Skill- the ability, coming from one's knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc., to do something well.

6-Impulse- sudden, involuntary inclination prompting to action.

7. External- a : an outer part b : an external feature or aspect —usually used in plural

8. Accuracy- The quick and effortless reading of words in our out of context

9. Rate- How quickly and accurately a reader reads connected words

10. Inflection or expressiveness- The tonal and rhythmic aspects of spoken language: pitch, stress patterns, and duration that convey information beyond the actual words themselves. Are you reading the way you talk?

Vocabulary Words for Quiz 2

1- Setting- the time and the place in which a narrative occurs.

2-Plot- the sequence of related events that make up a story or novel.

3-Conflict- a struggle between opposing forces.

4-Resolution- the outcome of the conflict of a story, when loose ends are wrapped up.

5-Characterization- the  methods a writer uses to develop characters.

6-Dialogue- conversation between characters

7. Incident A distinct place of action as in an episode in a story or a play

8. 1st person- The story is told from the main character's point of view and uses the pronoun "I" and "we"

9. 2nd person- The narrator tells the story to another character using "you", so that the story is being told through the addressee's point of view

10. 3rd person- the story is told from an outside point of view and uses the pronouns "he", "she", and "they"
